ILOILO City – A 32-year-old resident of the component city of Passi in Iloilo province died of a head injury.
Richard Gaspar was driving a tricycle that crashed against a motorcycle in Barangay Gines Viejo, Passi City.
Gaspar was taken to the Don Valerio Palmares Sr. Memorial District Hospital where he expired, a police report stated.
The motorcycle driver – 20-year-old Cedric Paccial of the same village – was taken to the same hospital for the treatment of his injuries.
The collision happened at around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, stated the police report. It was not immediately clear what circumstances led to the crash.
According to the World Health Organization, around 1.2 million around the world die in road traffic crashes.
In the Philippines, 10,012 died in road traffic crashes in 2015, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority.
In another set of data from the Department of Health, there were 30,412 road crash-related injuries in the same year.
Motorcycle riders were the most vulnerable to injuries – 19,852 cases, or 65 percent, of patients injured were riding a motorcycle – the Health department data showed./PN
