MANILA – A chess player from Silay City, Negros Occidental delivered the Philippine team’s third gold medal in the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Sander Severino topped the men’s singles P1 standard event on Wednesday.
Fellow Filipino chess player Redor Menardo won silver. Jasper Rom and Arman Subaste, also of the Philippines, took home a bronze each.
Josephine Medina settled for silver in table tennis’ women’s singles TT8 event. She lost to China’s Mao Jingdian in three sets 8-11, 3-11, 6-11 in the final match.
Medina, who represented the Philippines in the 2012 and 2016 Summer Paralympics, actually had a strong start – she swept Thailand’s Kanlaya Kriabklang and China’s Huang Wenjian.
Swimmer Erwin Gawilan, meanwhile, chipped in two silver medals in 50m and 100m freestyle on top of his gold and bronze medals, while Archelle Guion bagged a silver medal in powerlifting.
Godfrey Taberna won bronze in the men’s road cycling (C4) event after clocking 2 hours, 11 minutes and 24.359 seconds, behind silver medalist Najib Mohb of Malaysia (silver) and Weiguoping of China (gold).
The Philippines is currently on 13th place in the medal tally with three gold, six silver and six bronze medals – surpassing its five-silver, five-bronze medal haul in the 2014 edition./PN
