MANILA – Negrense chesser Sander Severino and swimmer Ernie Gawilan captured their second gold medals in the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
After capturing gold in individual event, the Silay City native Severino took home yet another gold medal in the Men’s Team Standard P1 competition late Wednesday with Henry Lopez and Jasper Rom.
The 33-year-old Severino, who has Lou Gehrig’s disease, pocketed the team gold with Lopez and Rom after finishing the matches with a total of 14 points.
The B2/B3 squad of Redor Menandro, Arman Subaste and Israel Peligro delivered the chess delegation’s third gold medal after rounding up their campaign with a total of 13 points.
Gawilan, meanwhile, captured his second gold medal after topping the Men’s 100-meter Backstroke S7 on Wednesday evening at the GBK Aquatics Center in Jakarta.
The 27-year-old Davaoeño had a photo finish in the finale as he and Daisuke Ejima were neck and neck in the race. Both ended up with a time of 01:19.90 to for a double gold finish.
Gawilan increased further his personal medal to two golds (Men’s 100-meter Backstroke S7 and 200-meter Individual Medley SM7) and two silvers (Men’s 50-meter Freestyle S7 and Men’s 100-meter Freestyle S7).
Bowler Kim Ian Chi, together with Samuel Matias, pocketed silver in the Mixed Doubles TPB10 event after finishing with an average score of 210.8. Korea won the event with a 232.10 average.
