BACOLOD Tay Tung High School snagged two crowns while STI-West Negros University averted a sweep by the Thunderbolts in the 2018 NOPSSCEA basketball tournament on Sunday at the STI-WNU gym.
The Thunderbolts captured the championship in the Aspirants division with a 60-54 victory over the tough University of St. La Salle-Bacolod Stingers in the final round.
Led by the 6-foot-3 center Kobe Demisana, John Ordas, Ryan Tan, and Nathan Jundana, the Thunderbolts fought toe-to-toe with the Stingers in the entire match before creating enough distance in the fourth to hang on to the victory.
Also part of the team were Mike Estelloso, Jules Wong, Nick Tan, Adrielle Binguan, Johnray Castiller, Joshua Dignadice, Thomas Pillado, Dylan Despi, CJ Juguan, Marvin delos Santos, Enzo Chua, and Kyle Chua.
The Thunderbolts also took home the crown in the elementary category by defeating rival St. John’s Institute Baby Falcons 76-74 in a tightly contested affair.
Leading the team were Vince Hugo, Adrian Alagaban, Chino Uy, Joachim Chuatico, Alexander Dingcong, Kian Ramos, Ethan Chia, Toni Siglos, Carl Jalea, Philip Sison, Brylle Majometano, Ranzford Boadan, Manu Salvio, Ronn Bedonia, Jorald Gambol, Brian Ong, and Dave Recordo.
A loss to STI-WNU in the Juniors division halted the Thunderbolts’ bid for a sweep in NOPSSCEA basketball.
The Thunderbolts were on top by 6 in the opening half but the STI-WNU drew strength from its home crowd to turn things around in the second half to run away with a 6-point victory.
In elementary volleyball, Trinity Christian School registered back-to-back titles after beating St. John’s Institute while also defending their 10-under title./PN
