BACOLOD City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) passed a resolution supporting Senate Bill No. 2034, an act increasing the monthly minimum wage for public school teachers to P28,000 and non-teaching personnel to P16,000.
The bill is authored by Sen. Maria Lourdes Nancy Binay.
According to the SP, the state is mandated to promote and improve the social and economic status of public school teachers by providing them a better living and working conditions.
“Education is given the highest priority in governance. Teaching will attract and retain its rightful share of the best available talents by means of adequate remuneration and other means of job satisfaction,” stressed resolution proponent Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr.
He added that public school teachers play a significant role in educating the Filipino youth, who turn in become the future leaders of the country.
They lead an extraordinary part in the lives of the Filipino children, molding them to become responsible citizen, said Gamboa.
Part of the resolution cited that as of January 2018 the entry- level position of a licensed teacher on a salary grade (SG) 11 amounted to P20,179 per month, based on the Salary Standardization Law (SSL) third tranche.
Meanwhile, in the same SSL third tranche, the non-teaching personnel who provide support to teachers earn only P 10,510 per month.
Gamboa said the said bill will help negate the image of the Filipino teacher as poor and buried in debt. Teachers are professionals who deserve to live a life of dignity, respect, and decent compensation, said Gamboa./PN
