ILOILO City – Thirty-three students from schools in this city were recognized by the local government for winning mathematics competitions abroad.
They brought home 30 medals – four gold, 11 silver and 15 bronze – six Merit Awards and one Excellence Prize.
The students were trained under the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG) Philippines.
The delegates were from Ateneo de Iloilo – Santa Maria Catholic School, Iloilo Scholastic Academy, SPED-Integrated School for Exceptional Children, Iloilo Scholastic Academy, Hua Siong College of Iloilo, PAREF-Westbridge School for Boys, Assumption Iloilo, and Philippine Science High School.
Jonathan Glorial, MTG center coordinator and faculty member of the West Visayas State University, said the students won in the following competitions:
* International Mathematics Wizard Challenge in Jakarta, Indonesia
* Olympics Mathematics 3D Cup Pan Asia Pacific International Competition 2018 in Hong Kong
* International Mathematics Contest in Singapore
* Bulgaria International Mathematics Competition in Burgas, Bulgaria
* China Primary Math Olympiad in Hang Zhou, Zhejiang province, China
* Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad in Bangkok
* Speak! International Competition in Singapore
* Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad
The city government gave the winning students medals and plaques of appreciation on Nov. 26.
Their victories prove that “our medium of instruction is at par with the teaching all over the world,” Mayor Jose Espinosa III said.
Noting that most of the winners were from private schools, Espinosa hoped that more students from public schools can compete.
But, at the same time, he acknowledged that the city government has limits when it comes to supporting student competitions.
“We can only extend financial support if it’s a local event,” said the mayor.
But Espinosa assured that the city government provides public schools training through the School Board fund. (PNA)
