ILOILO City – Thirty-three students were honored by the city government for winning in mathematics competitions abroad.
The students were trained under the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG) Philippines and bagged awards in the International Mathematics Competition and “Speak!” International Competition in 2017 and 2018.
Jonathan Glorial, a faculty of West Visayas State University (WVSU) and MTG center coordinator, said the students excelled in the International Mathematics Wizard Challenge in Jakarta, Indonesia; Olympics Mathematics 3D Cup Pan Asia Pacific International Competition 2018 in Hong Kong; International Mathematics Contest in Singapore; The Bulgaria International Mathematics Competition; China Primary Math Olympiad in Hang Zhou, Zhejiang Province; Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad; Speak! International Competition in Singapore; and Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad.
The delegates bagged 30 medals – four gold, 11 silver and 15 bronze; six merit awards and one excellence prize – in categories they represented.
The students received a medal and plaque of appreciation from the city government.
“This shows that our medium of instruction is at par with teaching all over the world,” said Mayor Jose Espinosa III.
The delegates were from Ateneo de Iloilo-Santa Maria Catholic School; Iloilo Scholastic Academy; SPED-Integrated School for Exceptional Children; Iloilo Scholastic Academy; Hua Siong College of Iloilo; PAREF Westbridge School; Assumption Iloilo; and Philippine Science High School.
Espinosa expressed hope that more students from public schools can also compete, saying that most of the winners came from private schools. He admitted there are limitations as far as the city’s provision of assistance is concerned.
“We can only extend financial support if it’s a local event,” he said.
The city government, through its school board fund, is efficient in providing public schools with training, he said. (PNA)
