KALIBO, Aklan – A Sangguniang Bayan member called for a litter- and smoke-free celebration of the Ati-Atihan Festival in January next year.

“In 2018, the town of Kalibo achieved a vape-free and smoke-free Ati-Atihan revelry,” said Cynthia Dela Cruz, chairwoman of the committee on environment.

Dela Cruz said the municipal council unanimously supported her resolution making such call to the local government’s executive department.

“Next year, while enforcing the same policies, we also hope to [make] a litter-free festival,” she said.

Kalibo is popularly known for the Ati-Atihan, a festival in honor of Señor Santo Niño which is considered the “mother of Philippine festivals.”

Vendors are expected to ensure proper waste management at their respective stalls during the festival, the Sangguniang Bayan said.

The municipal council also sought help from the local police, auxiliary police and barangay tanods to support the campaign by watching out for litterbugs./PN
