ANGELA Ponce, the first-ever transgender to have competed in this year’s Miss Universe representing the country of Spain, last Wednesday took to Twitter to express her happiness for her pageant sister Catriona Gray as the new rightful titleholder.
“Yes I am happy [for] sister [Catriona Gray]. Congrats, Philippines, our new Miss Universe. She is beautiful, she is a very kind girl. I’m very happy for you Cat,” wrote Angela of the Filipina-Australian beauty.
It can be recalled that Catriona has once come to Angela’s defense by taking a stand for transgender women being included in the pageant.
“I’m open to it, because individually, I see beauty queens more than a physical aspect. We represent something – that has to be what we’re there for. And she has a purpose. She is that voice for the transgender community,” Catriona said.
“If she can further educate people about what are the needs of the transgender community to get us to be more compassionate towards them… I have close friends who are transgender, so I’ve heard their experiences, and there is a lot of work to be done in how we come towards them,” said the 24-year-old beauty queen in a special guesting on the Saturday talk show, “The Bottomline.”
Aside from Catriona, Angela also showed her love and appreciation towards the Philippines.
“I love you Philippines, and all my fans that always support me,” wrote Miss Spain.
While she failed to advance to the Top 20, Angela had her own defining moment in Miss Universe when she made her historical walk onstage for having broken barriers as the first transgender candidate. (Push)
