ILOILO City – Persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens received gifts from the city government yesterday – the first of two successive days of gift-giving by city hall every holiday season.
Today it’s the turn of indigent families, said City Administrator Hernando Galvez.
For this year’s gift-giving, the city government targets to bring cheer to an estimated 24,000 beneficiaries.
Mayor Jose Espinosa III led yesterday’s distribution of gifts in front of city hall. The activity started at 7 p.m.
“Then mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog started this tradition. Mayor Joe is continuing it,” said Galvez.
The gifts are “food packs” containing rice, canned goods and chocolate drinks.
Officials of organizations of senior citizens and PWDs were tapped to identify the beneficiaries. Tickets were issued.
Galvez said beneficiaries must personally receive the food packs by presenting their tickets.
“There were many complaints last year. They did not receive their gifts, they claimed, so we devised this ticket scheme,” said Galvez.
Previously, the city government entrusted the food packs to barangay captains for distribution to the beneficiaries./PN
