Program aims for ‘zero waste’ Bacolod City

BACOLOD City – “Zero waste” is the end goal of the city government’s waste segregation program, according to Councilor Cindy Rojas.

The chairwoman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s (SP) committee on environment and ecology stressed this in a resolution she authored in line with Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

The resolution, which the SP passed last week, enjoined the Department of Public Services and the City Mayor’s Office to lead the “National Zero Waste Month” celebration in this city this January, pursuant to Proclamation No. 760 issued on May 5, 2014.

During the celebration, the city government will put emphasis on measures that promote environmental awareness and spark action among citizens against environmental degradation.

“Zero waste is an advocacy that promotes designing and managing of products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and to conserve and recover all resources,” said Rojas.

The zero waste movement has been gradually spreading around the world since last year, with the rise of reusable products like metal and bamboo straws to combat single-use plastics.

According to Rojas, aiming for zero waste production is a “goal that is ethical, economical, efficient, and visionary to guide people in changing their lifestyles.”/PN
