BACOLOD City – Bacolodnons should observe proper waste disposal to minimize the amount of trash washed up on the coastal area of Barangay Singcang-Airport.
Village chief Rosinie Distrito made this appeal amid the increasing volume of garbage found in their barangay.
On Wednesday, about 900 sacks of trash – mostly plastic – were collected in the area.
These tons of trash are from residential and commercial areas in Bacolod thrown at the Magsungay and Lupit rivers.
Distrito said they have initiated a program called “Basura Baylo Bugas” to encourage residents help in cleaning up the coast.
Under the program, every two sacks of garbage collected from the rivers or the coastal area are exchanged with a kilogram of rice.
The residents were also reminded to follow the city government’s “no segregation, no collection” policy.
Aside from the city ordinance, Singcang-Airport also has its own ordinance on solid waste management.
Violators of the barangay ordinance are fined P500, P1,000 and P1,500 for the first, second and third offense, respectively./PN
