MINIMALISM screams in the fashion choices of the world’s highly successful people. Creative genius and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was always in a black turtleneck. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg wears a grey t-shirt. Former US President Barack Obama is always seen in a black or grey suit.

However, if you come to think of it, these multimillionaires and popular individuals can afford any signature clothes. They can go shopping from Chanel to Gucci to Prada to Dolce and Gabbana. Given their millions – and their unreachable connections – they can don a different outfit every single day. But they choose not to.

So what are the reasons behind wearing the same outfit every day? Here are some:

  1. Less decision-making

We spend so much time choosing what to wear. Personally, it has been draining – to look at your closet full of clothes only to end up wearing an outfit that you have worn a million times. You have a shirt in all colors, skirts in all styles, and neckties in various designs.

Obama is one of the many successful people who wear suits in the same color.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, the former president said he tries to limit decisions. “You’ll see I wear only gray or blue suits. I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make.”

Obama’s statement is seconded by an article published on the New York Times. Entitled “Do You Suffer From Decision Fatigue”, the article states that “the more choices you make throughout the day, the harder each one becomes for your brain.”

The article furthermore explained that when it becomes hard for your brain to decide, you end up with two shortcuts. One is to act “impulsively instead of expending the energy to first think through the consequences,” and the other is to do nothing.

  1. Less time wasted

Imagine the time being wasted on picking what outfit to wear. You stare at your closet for 15 minutes, choose an outfit, change into another, then choose again. You spend around 30 minutes just picking clothes.

When you have a minimalist wardrobe, you will feel that you have more time for other things. You will not rush eating breakfast, driving to work, or talking to your family. You can finally have time to do other things.

  1. You will always feel good

If you wear clothes that are comfortable, you will always feel good. Thus, it is always practical to choose comfort over style.

Becomingminimalist.com author Joshua Becker experimented on his wardrobe and said it changed his life. Why?

“By wearing one thing for a week, I was tested. Would I get bored? Did this really look good on me? Interestingly, I recognized what clothes were most important to me. Finding your “look” can take time, but realizing what you feel confident and comfortable in is empowering,” he said in an article published on the website.

  1. More savings

How much do we spend to buy new clothes that we do not even need? Imagine saving all those money. What can you buy with that amount? If we stick to minimalist clothes, we will not anymore be spending for clothes that are only trendy during one season. /PN
