P300M allotted for San Jose breakwater project

SAN JOSE, Antique – The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is set to fund the construction of a P300-million breakwater at the new fishing port in this capital town this year.

The “important” breakwater project would enable vessels from Cuyo and Palawan to dock in San Jose, said Gov. Rhodora Cadiao on Wednesday.

“I am so happy to know about this development,” Cadiao added. “The current docking area at the port needed to be extended so that the barges and fishing boats would be able to dock.”

The DOTr assistance will be used to extend the port docking area to the deeper part of the shoreline.

Provincial Information Officer Galileo Magbanua said the funding has been included in the 2019 General Appropriations Act (GAA) through the initiative of Sen. Loren Legarda.

“Once the GAA is signed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, it will be implemented,” he added.

In October 2018, the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) turned over the new fishing port worth P40 million to the municipal government.

Custodio Balawin, officer-in-charge of the Iloilo Fish Port Complex who represented PFDA general manager Glen Pangapalan, said during the turnover ceremony that the port is part of the post-harvest facilities provided to improve the livelihood of local fishing communities. (With PNA/PN)
