ILO urges Filipinas to consider STEM jobs

MANILA – Women should consider opportunities in STEM-related occupations to compete in workplaces of the future, an official of the International Labor Organization said Friday.

Most women are not aware of the opportunities in STEM, or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, said International Labor Organization national project coordinator Linartes Viloria.

“While there is an increase in number of people getting into these occupations right now, we are finding that there’s still a lot of work to do to convince more women to get into STEM related occupation,” Viloria said.

“Especially now. when we’re moving to future of work when we’re requiring more STEM related kind of skills that will be needed to compete in the workplace,” she said.

The ILO has launched programs to provide women with skills that can help them gain employment in STEM-related fields, she said.

Combining technical and soft skills will help women become more agile and competitive, Viloria said. (ABS-CBN News)
