BACOLOD City – The City Council ordered the local government offices to come up an action plan assisting farm workers affected by the El Niño phenomenon.
Councilor Bartolome Orola authored a resolution urging The Office of the Sectoral Concerns, City Cooperative Livelihood and Development Office and Public Employment and Service Office to make an action plan helping local farmers mitigate the effects of the prolonged dry spell.
Orola said El Niño is a part of a routine climate pattern that brings drought conditions in Negros Occidental.
Farmers play an important role in promoting food security and sufficiency in the city so it is necessary to come up measures to mitigate the effects of the drought, cited on the resolution.
Negros Occidental may experience extended dry spell that will last until late November this year, according to the Department of Agriculture secretary Emmanuel Piñol.
The crop damage brought by the El Niño phenomenon in the province now reached P8.3-million from Jan. to Feb./PN
