MANILA – University of the Philippines Lady Maroons got back on the winning track in UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball after a 25-27, 25-14, 25-12, 25-21 win over Adamson University Lady Falcons on Sunday at San Juan Arena.
Diana Carlos and Maria Lina Molde finished with 14 points apiece, while Maristela Layug added 11 markers for the Lady Maroons, which finished the first round of eliminations with 4-3 win-loss card.
The Lady Maroons struggles in their last two losses were still evident in the opening set as they surrendered errors after errors allowing the Lady Falcons to snatch away the 1-0 set lead.
The Lady Maroons, however, recovered big time in the second set as it opened a 19-9 lead to level the count before doing the same in the third frame to take the 2-1 set advantage.
The Lady Maroons had another strong start in the fourth frame and reached match point at 24-17 but the Lady Falcons came up with four straight points before surrendering the match to UP.
“We just wanted to focus on finishing out sets and staying sharp,” said Lady Maroons head coach Godfrey Okumu. “In our past games, we had the tendency to hurry things. I told them before the match that I just wanted them to play without fear and play smart.”
Mary Joy Dacoron tallied 15 points, while Negrense Christine Joy Soyud had 10 markers for the Lady Falcons, which dropped to last place in the standings with 1-6 win-loss record./PN
