MANILA – United Volleyball Club bucked the absence of one of its imports as it cruised to a 25-18, 25-23, 25-22 victory over the Foton Tornadoes in the 2019 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix on Tuesday night at the San Juan Arena.

Yaasmeen Bedart-Ghani led the way with 20 points, including 19 attacks, while Filipina-American Kalei Mau provided 11 markers, on nine attacks and two service aces, for the United VC (6-5).

The United VC, which were without its other reinforcement Tai Manu-Olevao, also got huge game from setter Alohi Robins-Hardy, who finished with 27 excellent sets and four points.

“We just had a problem closing out sets,” said United VC head coach Joshua Ylaya. “Our problem was relaxing on the crucial moments. It hit us pretty bad. That’s a feeling na we’d rather experience now than later. They don’t want to lose like that again.”

Milagros Collar top-scored with 19 points while Courtney Felinski managed 12 markers for the cellar-dwelling Tornadoes, which dropped further to 1-10 win-loss slate.

Cignal HD Spikers, meanwhile, took down PLDT Home Fibr Power Hitters, 25-16, 25-23, 17-25, 25-18, to forge a share of the third place. Both teams are now sharing identical 7-6 records.

American import Erica Wilson led the charge for the HD Spikers with 27 points, while Ana Artemeva chipped in 17 spikes and Rachel Anne Daquis contributed 14 markers for the HD Spikers./PN
