MANILA – Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles kept its hold on the top spot of UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball after a 25-23, 25-16, 25-23 sweep over University of the Philippines Lady Maroons on Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Kat Tolentino led the way with 15 points, on 11 attacks, three blocks and a service ace, for the Lady Eagles, which have tallied its eighth straight victory to remain on top with 8-1 card.
Madeleine Madayag and Bea de Leon contributed 10 and nine markers, respectively, while Julia Samonte was also instrumental for the Lady Eagles with eight points and 15 digs.
“(It’s) good we won. I think we got lucky. Kung titingnan talaga, we gave up a lot of errors. That’s on us. Sobrang break nun for us,” said Lady Eagles team captain De Leon referring to their 25 errors.
The Lady Eagles was most threatened in the third set where they have to rally from an 18-20 deficit to surge ahead 23-21. Madayag and Samonte then put on the finishing touches to seal the straight set triumph.
On the part of the Lady Maroons, they did not only lose the match but also lost star hitter Maria Lina Molde, who was stretchered out early in the second set due to an injury.
Diana Carlos tallied eight points, while Marian Buitre and Justine Dorog scored six markers each for the Lady Maroons, which slumped to 5-4 win-loss record following the loss./PN
