Central Iloilo towns get flood control systems

ILOILO City – Three flood control structures were completed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Iloilo 2nd District Engineering Office in various towns in the central part of Iloilo.

District Engineer Sanny Boy Oropel said they completed the Jalaur River Control System along Pototan-Dingle-Tabugon Road in Poblacion, Dingle town in the amount of P18.6 million.

This flood control system included the construction of a 117.20-lineal meter, 3.0-meter wide slope protection (concrete revetment) with concrete guard rail and stone masonry.

“Due to its unique design, this project will not only serve as protective structure from flood but will also serve as venue for recreational activities like jogging and biking of the residents in the area,” Oropel said.

Likewise, the District Office completed the construction of Suage River Control System in Janiuay, Iloilo, at the back of Federico Roman Tirador District Memorial Hospital.

Oropel said the project, in the amount of P46.501 million, involved construction of 492.0-lineal meter, 4.0-meter revetment wall on steel sheet pile foundation, including drainage and end protection.

“This project protects the lives and properties of the residents living near the river, as well as their livelihood such as agricultural products, considering that these communities are prone to flood especially when heavy rains occur,” he said.

In addition, the Office has completely constructed a slope protection beside Barotac Nuevo Hospital in Barangay Tabucan, Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo in the amount of P24.499 million.

Said project, which involves construction of 255.0-lineal meter, 3.0-meter slope protection with concrete paving blocks esplanade, concrete guardrails and grouted riprap, protects nearby structures against soil erosion as well as from flood caused by water overflow during rainy days.(DPWH-6/PN)
