MANILA – The private sector is welcome to join the government’s inspection of businesses in Boracay to thwart the potential recruitment of foreign workers for jobs fit for Filipinos, Labor secretary Silvestre Bello said Sunday.

Bello said he has instructed the labor department’s Western Visayas office to inspect the holiday island following reports that foreigners, “not necessarily Chinese,” were hired by some establishments there.

The labor department, however, only has less than 800 inspectors tasked with keeping watch some 900,000 business establishments across the country, he said.

“If they (labor representatives) have some volunteers, by all means, we will accommodate them,” he told ANC.

Bello earlier urged citizens to report foreign nationals that are seen working for jobs that can be done by Filipinos. Smart and Globe Telecom subscribers can reach DOLE’s hotline by dialing 1-3-4-9 without any prefix. (ABS-CBN News)
