MONGOLIA – A quarantine was lifted in Mongolia after two people died from bubonic plague, allowing a number of tourists to leave the area.
The Mongolian couple contacted the illness after eating raw meat of a marmot, a type of rodent.
A six-day quarantine was declared on May 1 following their deaths in Mongolia’s western Bayan Olgii province bordering both China and Russia.
In previous centuries plague outbreaks killed millions in Europe and Asia.
Human cases were rare but can be deadly unless treated with antibiotics. (BBC)
