Pavia summer chess tournament

CHESS players from barangays Pal-agon and Aganan dominated the Municipality of Pavia Summer Chess Tournament held recently at the Pavia National High School Gym.

Archie Jamotillo of Barangay Pal-agon emerged as overall champion in the 12-and-under category with Mherie Clarence Tubonggan of Barangay Pandac and Charles Wilfred De Jose of Barangay Tigum finishing behind.

Jamotillo bagged the crown in the 12-and-under boys with a cash prize of P2,000 while De Jose and Dino Apostol Jr. of Barangay Pal-agon placing second and third with cash prizes of P1,500 and P1,000, respectively.

Tubonggan, meanwhile, emerged the champion in the 12-and-under girls with a cash prize of P2,000 followed by Vince Marie ArcaƱo of Barangay Tigum (P1,500) and Brin Juliah Jamerlan of Barangay Pal-agon (P1,000).

Trina Apostol clinched the overall championship in the 17-and-under category with Ardin Apostol settling for first runner-up and Kyle Velez of Barangay Pandac, second runner-up.

Trina topped the 17-and-under girls category with a cash prize of P2,000 while Zoe Kyra Belandres of Barangay Pandac and Aynn Marie Joaquin of Barangay Cabugao Norte behind.

Ardin, on the other hand, stamped his class with gold medal finish in the 17-and-under boys category with Velez and Gabriel Benedict Jovero of Barangay Purok-1 finishing behind him.

Lemuel Rodriguez of Barangay Aganan was hailed as overall champion in the Open category boys with Chervin Porras of Barangay Purok-1 and Jerson Gayosa of Barangay Purok-2 placing second and third.

Irish Kaye Jamotillo of Barangay Pal-agon emerged as champion in the open category girls with Lady Lyn Gumban of Barangay Balabag finishing behind.

The chess tournament was organized by Pavia Chess Club with Municipality of Pavia, Pavia National High School, SK, Davies Paint, SB Pyt TrimaƱez and Daniel Clar serving as its sponsors.

Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Blue Barons paddlers stamped its class in the recently-concluded 2019 Palarong Pambansa in Davao City by taking home 11 medals.

From the total, three were golds, seven were bronze and another silver from both the secondary and elementary levels.

For the elementary boys team event, the team of Dirk Atilano, Vincent Dominguez, Shaun Jardinico and Kristian Magallanes claimed the gold medal.

Atilano alongside Neka Therese Daguia, both trained under Altruists Table Tennis Club at Fil-Sino Cultural Center Foundation Inc., grabbed the bronze in the mixed doubles. The team is coached by coach Judith Bobot and trainer Garry Trasporto.

Meanwhile, Daguia and Dianah Aeris Yapiso of St. Scholasticaā€™s Academy-Bacolod under coach Duphin Pescadilla both secured the third place after winning over CALABARZON and Region 8, respectively. On the other hand, their teammates Kaira Agreda and Ashley Figueroa also made it to quarterfinals in the team event.

For the secondary level, J Allan Noel Gayoso won the gold medal in the singles event while his teammate Rem Francis Caoyonan settled for bronze medal. Moreover, Gayoso and Caoyonan together with John Romel Baria and Joshua Chavez took the silver medal in the team event.

Meanwhile, for the secondary girls, Clarice Thalia Gomez, Ann Niccolle and Marie Levee Oliva, and Jan Ashley Vecencio captured the team event as Marie Levee Oliva and Gomez finished bronze medals in girls doubles./PN
