MANILA – Foton Tornadoes overcame a slow start to pull off a 27-25, 25-15, 25-20 victory over Marinerang Pilipina Lady Skippers in the 2019 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference Saturday at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center in Bulacan.
Alyja Daphne Santiago delivered eight attacks and four blocks for 12 points, while Elaine Kasilag added eight hits, two aces and two blocks for the Tornadoes, which rises to 3-3 slate.
Maika Ortiz also made her presence felt with 11 attacks, while Dindin Manabat and Marian Buitre tallied seven points apiece for the Tornadoes, which took advantage of its height to come up with 13 blocks against the Lady Skippers three.
“It was a good win for us, we can start to build a momentum from this win,” said Tornadoes head coach Aaron Velez. “I’m really glad to see the team step up, especially after that opening set where we gained our composure.”
Judith Abil and Chiara Permentilla had 10 points for the newcomer Lady Skippers, which remains winless in five outings.
In the second game, defending champions Petron Blaze Spikers scored back-to-back victories after hacking out a 25-16, 29-27, 25-22 straight-set triumph over the PLDT Home Fibr Power Hitters.
Cherry Rondina top-scored with 11 points, on 10 attacks and a block, as the Blaze Spikers improved to 4-1. Gretchel Soltones finished with 14 markers for the Power Hitters, which slumped to 2-4./PN
