MANILA – Ann Katherine Quitoy of Team Negros Occidental delivered the first gold medal for the Philippine delegation in the 2019 ASEAN School Games in Semarang, Indonesia.
Quitoy, a standout of Romanito Maravilla National High School, broke the gold-less campaign of the country in the tournament by retaining the girls javelin throw event gold on Sunday.
Head coach Addy Arca said it was a well-deserved gold medal for Quitoy. She did her best to be ready for the competition despite nursing an injury.
“She worked hard for it,” Arca said, “kaya the gold medal repeat was extra special.”
Bernalyn Bejoy, meanwhile, clinched a silver medal for the delegation in the 400 meter hurdles and fellow Negrense Trexie dela Torre also won silver in girls long jump.
The Philippines also got medals in swimming with Thanya Angelyn dela Cruz finishing silver in girls 50 meter breaststroke and Philip Joaquin Santos delivering a bronze in boys 200 meter backstroke.
Meanwhile, the National University Bullpups-Philippines kicked off its campaign in boys basketball with a 87-47 victory over host Indonesia and 105-31 domination over Singapore./PN
