Iloilo City squad girds for Batang Pinoy volleyball

MANILA – The Iloilo City girls volleyball team is aiming for a modest finish in the 2019 Batang Pinoy National Finals from Aug. 25 to 31 at the Speaker Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

Under the tutelage of Ateneo de Iloilo head coach Bandoi Montelibano, the Iloilo squad is using the weekends to prepare against the toughest girls volleyball teams around the country.

Starting middle blocker Amie Provido told Panay News that while the road will not be easy for them, they are hoping to at least reach the Final Four of the competition.

“We will give our best,” said Provido who, at an age of 15, is already drawing interest from Manila-based schools De La Salle University Lady Spikers, National University Lady Bulldogs and Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws.

“Coach Bandoi told us that our goal is at least a third place finish. But we will go for the gold if we can,” said Provido. “We were training regularly so we really know each other well na even if we came from different schools.”

Aside from Provido, also in the Iloilo squad are Athea Aposaga, Vanessa Marie Diaz, Keiara Almirante, Dea Jane Canaya, Marianne Grace Calapaan, Pau Sampiano, Rovy Ann Amuan, Mary Flores, Lara Andrea, Alyanna Kaye Detablan, and Robielle Silla.

The Iloilo City squad defeated all their opponents in the Pinoy 2019 Visayas Qualifying leg girls volleyball, including Negros Occidental’s St. John’s Institute Falcons in the gold medal match./PN
