WV poised as model for basic education

ILOILO City – The Department of Education (DepEd) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have tapped Western Visayas to serve as a model of basic education in the country through the newly-launched ABC+.

The ABC+ aims to develop “innovative approaches to material development and building capacity within the regions to develop and make available materials in the variety of languages or mother tongue,” Beatrice Conde, director of USAID’s Regional Office of Acquisition and Assistance, said in the launching of the program on Wednesday in this city.

She said the project will improve basic life skills for children in the early grades and will help them acquire the ability to do math, read and write in Filipino, English, and mother tongue.

Dr. Rosalina Villaneza, chief of the Teaching and Learning Division of the DepEd Central Office, said that after the implementation of the program, other regions will “look up to” Western Visayas on basic education.

“Besides this is a big region, there are a lot of schools in the far-flung areas and there are also several languages that need to be addressed,” she said.

The program will be implemented from July this year until June 2024. (With a report from PNA/PN)
