PAKISTAN – Maryam Nawaz Sharif, a leading figure in Pakistan’s political opposition, was arrested by anti-graft authorities.
The country’s National Accountability Bureau said she was detained in connection with a money laundering probe, involving a sugar mill owned by the Sharif family.
Sharif’s cousin, Yousaf Abbas Sharif, was also nabbed. The pair will appear before the court on Friday.
She has led several large political rallies in recent weeks and was a vocal critic of Prime Minster Imran Khan and Pakistan’s military.
The Sharif family dominated Pakistani politics for decades and has been embroiled in several high-profile corruption cases.(BBC)
