Renaming of coastal road after deceased congressman pushed

ILOILO – Provincial Board member Rolando Distura has proposed the renaming of the Iloilo City-Leganes-Dumangas coastal road to the Cong. Narciso Dolar Monfort Boulevard.

The late Monfort, congressman of the 4th District, was instrumental in the coastal road’s construction. He died 14 years ago, on Sept. 5, 2005.

The realization of the coastal road – and its five component bridges – spurred economic development in the areas where it traverses, according to Distura.

“By renaming the coastal road, we are thanking and memorializing the hard work of Congressman Monfort,” said Distura.

The coastal road is some 22 kilometers long from Barangay Ticud, La Paz, Iloilo City to the seaport in the municipality of Dumangas.

It traverses the two other towns, Leganes and Zarraga.

During the Sept. 3 regular session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, all members agreed to co-sponsor Distura’s resolution calling for the renaming of the road.

Distura hoped that all congressmen in Iloilo province (Janette Garin of the 1st District, Michael Gorriceta of the 2nd District, Lorenz Defensor of the 3rd District, Braeden John Biron of the 4th District, and Raul Tupas of the 5th District), Cong. Julienne Baronda of Iloilo City and Ilonggo senator Franklin Drilon would sponsor a bill in Congress regading the road’s renaming.

Monfort served as congressman of the 4th District for three successive three-year terms (1995-1998, 1998-2001 and 2001-2004./PN
