MANILA – University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers snapped its two-game slide in the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball in style. It manhandled the University of the East Red Warriors, 101-73, yesterday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Zachary Huang drained six triples to finish with career-high 22 points while Soulemane Chabi Yo chipped in double-double 22 points and 15 rebounds.
The Tigers moved up to a 5-4 win-loss slate.
From a seesaw battle early in the opening period, the Tigers surged to a 26-18 edge on triples by Sherwin Concepcion. UST continued to pound on UE in the second period behind Chabi Yo and Henri Lorenzo Subido for a 55-29 halftime lead.
The lead grew further for the Growling Tigers in the second half with Huang finding his shooting touch from outside and Chabi Yo scoring at will inside as the lead reached 30 points.
For the Red Warriors (3-6), Alex Diakhite finished with double-double 24 points and 12 rebounds. Rookie Neil Tolentino added 11 markers while Rey Suerte and Philip Manalang had 10 points each.
In the first game, National University Bulldogs leaned on Dave Ildefonso in overtime to escape with an 85-79 victory over Far Eastern University Tamaraws despite losing an early 18 point edge.
Ildefonso drained six of his 27 points total in the extension period as the Bulldogs repeated its first round mastery of the Tamaraws to improve to 2-7.
Issa Gaye and John Lloyd Clemente
added 16 and 15, respectively, for the Bulldogs./PN
