ILOILO City — A company from Boston, USA is proposing a cable car or automated electric vehicles (pods) transport system in this southern city.
Transit X sent an unsolicited proposal to Mayor Jerry Treñas for a privately-funded high capacity solar-powered 24/7 automated pod network connecting this city to municipalities in Iloilo province.
A cable car transport system runs on cables. The pods or cabins, hauled above the ground by means of cables, move from station to station allowing passengers to get in or out.
According to Councilor Ely Estante, vice chair of the Committee on Transportation in the Sangguniang Panlungsod, Transit Ex listed the following benefits of this transport system:
* reduce traffic congestion / remove traffic from the streets
* provide parking relief
* network operates 24/7
* can meet surge demand during peak-hours
* improve safety in public transportation
* affordable, flexible fares
* proven technology
* significant tourist potential
* no public funding
* system can be expanded as required
Traffic congestion has long been a problem in this city. While streets are narrow, the volume of vehicles has been increasing. Compounding the problem are illegally parked vehicles and drivers and pedestrians that do not follow traffic rules and regulations.
Transit X also proposed a five percent share to the city government from the gross revenue, said Estante.
All it would ask from the city government is a guarantee of right-of-way and air rights, he said.
“Waay gastuson ang city, sila tanan magasto. Ang obrahon sang syudad is to identify areas nga butangan sang ila poste para angtan sang ila cable cars,” said Estante.
One cable car or pod can accommodate five persons/passengers, according to Transit X.
Estante said Transit X would conduct a project presentation to the city council. The schedule of this, however, is yet to be determined./PN
