UST, NU bag UNIGAMES beach volleyball titles

ILOILO City – The University of Santo Tomas and National University clinched crowns in the 24th University Games beach volleyball competition over at Breakthrough, Villa Beach here.

UST Golden Tigresses of Mer Jauculan and Derie Virtusio stamped their class in the women’s beach volleyball finals. It defeated NU Lady Bulldogs, 21-17, 21-19 in the finals.

“It was our heart-centered approach to the game that led us to victory,” Virtusio said in an interview with USA Publications. “We just studied our opponent’s movements as part of our preparation and properly executed our tactics.”

On their way to the championship round, the Golden Tigresses defeated University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, while the Lady Bulldogs ousted Holy Cross of Davao College.

NU Bulldogs of James Buytrago and Pol Salvador, on the other hand, claimed the championship in men’s beach volleyball. It defeated University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in the finals, 21-18, 21-10.

“I think hard work, perseverance and the blockings we executed during the game paved us the way to the finals,” Buytrago said. “This UNIGAMES serves as an experience for us to develop our skills and to effectively communicate with my teammate.”

The Bulldogs barged to the championship round after defeating College of St. Benilde Blazers in the men’s semifinals, while the Fighting Maroons eliminated University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos./PN
