KALIBO, Aklan – The municipal police station here with the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit conducted an “Operation Greyhound” to the inmates and personnel of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).

Around 36 inmates with 22 personnel of the BJMP-Aklan were found negative for substance abuse after they were subjected into an on-the-spot drug testing.

BJMP-Aklan warden Senior Inspector Felix Sarania said the operation also yielded “nuisance contraband” including improvised lighter and heater, cans, nails, and woods.

Sariana, who was a former jail warden of the Negros District Jail in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, replaced Senior Inspector Denver Beltran, who was re-assigned to Barotac Viejo, Iloilo, following a series of escape incidents at the BJMP under his command. The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Aklan then created an investigating body for the alleged lapses.

The investigation centered on the escape of a certain JR Ruiz who bolted jail by climbing into a concrete wall of the Aklan Rehabilitation Center last month while his fellow inmates were attending a religious service inside the facility. He was re-arrested a week after.

Another inmate, Igmedio Tropa, who is facing murder charges, escaped custody in Batangas while being escorted to a court hearing in Manila. The BJMP is currently conducting a manhunt operation against him.(With Noel Cabobos/88.5FM/RadyotodoAklan/PN)
