MANILA – Negrense Bernadeth Pons and Cherry Rondina clinched the 2019 Rebisco Beach Volleyball International Open crown at the Sands SM By The Bay in Pasay City.
The Visayan pair completed a six-game sweep in the three-day event on Sunday night with a masterful 21-10, 21-16 win over Dij Rodriguez and Angelique Gervacio in the finals.
Both Pons and Rondina and Rodriguez and Gervacio are set to represent the country in the women’s beach volleyball competition of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games later this month in Subic.
Rondina and Pons reached the finals after a 21-14, 21-10 win over Hong Kong’s Yeung Wai Yan and Koo Yung Yung, while Rodriguez and Gervacio ousted New Zealand’s Renei Ursem and Olivia Macdonald, 21-14, 21-14.
In the quarterfinals round, Rondina and Pons topped Kasim Bundit University-Thailand 1’s Pawarun Chanthawichai and Mukdao Suchamnong, 21-16, 21-12, while Rodriguez and Gervacio scored a 21-14, 21-11 win over KBU Thailand 2’s Paweena Wong-Aksorn and Duanpen Arsa.
Ilonggas DM Demontaño and Jackie Estoquia of Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors bowed in the quarterfinals after being beaten by Yeung and Koo, while Mer Jauculan and Gen Eslaplor of UST was defeated by Ursem and Macdonald.
Meanwhile, Efraim Dimaculangan and Rancel Varga scored a 21-12, 21-18 win over fellow Filipino Kris Roy Guzman and Jaron Requinton to annex the men’s beach volleyball crown./PN
