MANILA – Filipino boxer Jerwin Ancajas easily retained his IBF world super flyweight belt after a sixth-round stoppage win over Chile’s Miguel Gonzales at Auditorio GNP Seguros in Puebla, Mexico.
This was Ancajas’ eighth successful defense of the world title he wrestled from Puerto Rican veteran McJoe Arroyo on September 2016 at the Philippine Marine Corp. in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.
Ancajas showed determination to finish the bout early yesterday. He immediately punished Gonzales with punches to the head and the body. The Chilean showed aggressiveness as well but not enough to hurt Ancajas.
Gonzales, however, slowly faded by fifth round to which Ancajas took advantage of by unloading more combinations against the last minute replacement foe.
Ancajas went for the kill in the sixth round. He connected several hooks and crosses to the head prompting referee Waybe Hedgpeth to end the match at the 1:53 mark.
Ancajas was supposed to have his title defense on Nov. 3 against Mexican Jonathan Javier Rodriguez but was cancelled a day before the match with the latter not showing up due to visa issues.
With the win, Ancajas improved his
record to 32-1-2 win-loss-draw ring record, including 22 stoppage victories,
while Gonzalez dropped to 31-3-0 slate, with eight win via stoppages./PN
