GUIMARAS – Four Iloilo City-based teams are set to compete in the 1st Mayor Eugene Reyes Invitational Basketball Tournament starting Jan. 9 at the Buenavista Covered Gym here.
The four teams are Central Philippine University Golden Lions, Western Institute of Technology-ILOPRISAA, AsiaLink/E and C Trucking, and P. Doce SBC-Iloilo Doctors College.
Opening ceremonies and matches will be on Jan. 9 with other elimination round matches are slated on Jan. 12 and 13.
Top two teams will play in the championship match in the final day on Jan. 14 while the latter two will dispute for the third place trophy.
Municipality of Buenavista Sports Coordinator Alex Fernandez said the pocket tournament aims to inspire the young Ilonggo basketball players to hone their skills further.
“This kind of league will inspire our locals and community,” Fernandez said. “After this, we are planning to have another invitational league this summer.”
The pocket tournament is in line with Buenavista’s Palayag Festival with cash prizes to be given to participating teams.
