Antique students told to make reading a habit

SAN JOSE, Antique – This province joined the globe in observing the World Read Aloud Day on Wednesday with 50 Grade 6 students of the Delegate Angel Salazar Jr. Memorial School.

The Read-Aloud Session, held at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) Session Hall, was led by SP member Errol Santillan.

The activity, spearheaded by the provincial library, which is under the office of SP Secretary Gabin, aims to encourage students to read books instead of spending much time on computers.

“Aside from today’s activity, the provincial library also goes to the barangays to promote reading through its mobile library,” Gabin said.

He added they have to use their own vehicles to bring books to the villages that do not have access to the library.

“We also solicit from private donors coloring books and other reading materials, which the children, especially in the Day Care Centers, enjoy,” he said.

Meanwhile, Vice Gov. Edgar Denosta encouraged students to make reading a habit.

“While I was still a student like you, I would frequently read,” Denosta said.

It is through reading that one sharpens his mind and acquires knowledge, he added.

The annual World Read Aloud Day, a global advocacy that highlights the importance of reading aloud and sharing stories, marked its 11th year. The event is celebrated in over 100 countries.(With a report from PNA/PN
