ILOILO – The massive province-wide cleanup drive “Limpyo Iloilo” starts today with a 2 p.m. caravan from the provincial capitol to the national comprehensive high school in the municipality of Santa Barbara.
“Let us make cleaning a daily habit,” said Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.
Through “Limpyo Iloilo” he wanted the province to have a “clean province identity.”
There will be a province-wide simultaneous clean-up at 4 p.m. after a 3 p.m. program following the caravan.
Joining today’s kick off are 43 towns, national government agencies, the academe (public and private elementary, secondary and tertiary schools), and the business sector.
The activity will emphasize solid waste management to reduce littering, throwing and illegal dumping of wastes along plazas, waterways and other public places.
The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) spearheads this campaign which will be done every third Saturday of each month in line with Provincial Ordinance No. 2018-184, Series of 2019 (“An ordinance requiring all local government units in coastal areas of the province of Iloilo to conduct a community-based coastal clean-up activity once a month”).
“Limpyo Iloilo aims to achieve a clean province for health, tourism and progress, and promote the culture and character of cleanliness, and spirit of volunteerism among Ilonggos,” said Defensor.
Other “Limpyo” partners come from nongovernment organizations, the religious sector, people’s organizations, youth organizations, and cooperatives.
PENRO urged participants to conduct a “waste audit” after every cleanup and submit a report. (With a report from Louine Hope Conserva, Capitol news/PN)
