SAN JOSE, Antique – This province will be sending a delegation of some 500 athletes and technical officials to the 2020 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet hosted by Aklan province on March 21-28.

According to Department of Education(DepEd)-Antique Superintendent Felisa Beriong, the Antiqueño athletes will leave on March 14 – a week ahead the WVRAA event – so that they could practice in the different sporting venues of the Calangcang Sports Complex in Makato, Aklan.

Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) scare, the 2020 edition of the WVRAA was rescheduled by DepEd Regional Office 6. It was originally set last month, but the 11 Chinese tourists, who were supposed to spend their vacation in the world-famous Boracay Island, were quarantined in the Aklan Provincial Hospital as a precautionary measure against the deadly virus.

For her part, Gov. Rhodora Cadiao announced on March 2 that the provincial government of Antique has given a financial assistance of P5 million for its delegation’s trainings and allowances.

“The provincial government of Antique is fully supportive of our athletes,” she said.

Cadiao, together with other government officials of this province, will also attend the 2020 WVRAA Meet to give moral support to the Antiqueño athletes.

“I encourage also the mayor and other local chief executives to go see the sports event in Aklan,” she said.

She added that their presence would inspire the athletes to excel in their respective sporting events.(With a report from PNA/PN)
