LIKE EVERYTHING else, the sports world is also hurt by the coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) pandemic with most sporting events getting called off as precautionary measure.
In the Philippines, the UAAP women’s volleyball recently called off its tournaments, including the crowd drawer volleyball events, while the NCAA is considering to terminate the ongoing Season 95.
Following suit was the Philippine Basketball Association, which decided to indefinitely postpone its days-old 2020 Philippine Cup with the continued rising of confirmed cases in the country.
PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said the move was a supreme sacrifice as it would definitely hurt the league’s income as well as stretching the 2020 season to next year but a bold move to protect the fans.
Just yesterday, in a surprising move, the National Basketball Association also decided to postpone indefinitely its matches as two players from Utah Jazz in Rudy Gobert and Emmanuel Mudiay tested positive for COVID-19.
The indefinite suspension was unforeseen by many as NBA fans thought the league will resort to closed-door matches, as what Golden State Warriors and Brooklyn Nets planned for their supposed game on Friday morning.
Many suspected that Gobert got the virus when he broke the protocol during one of the team’s media availability. He deliberately grasped the microphone after being interviewed by the media.
Aside from suspending the matches, the league had also tasked the teams that competed against the Jazz the past few days to conduct self-quarantine to determine if they were afflicted with the disease.
This pandemic is damaging not just to the sports fans but to everyone. We at Buzzer Beater is hoping this COVID-19 disease dissipate the soonest possible time.

Ryan Mark Molina of STI-West Negros University has been re-elected president of NOPSSCEA during the General Assembly and 40th Foundation Day held recently at the Chalet.
Molina, re-elected unopposed, recalled during the assembly some of the organization’s achievements last year which elevated NOPSSCEA during the 38th season and celebrated the breakthroughs and milestones this Season 39.
As NOPSSCEA president, Molina also led the organization as back-to-back champions in the elementary and secondary levels in the Palarong Panalalawigan. Likewise, NOPSSCEA was adjudged back-to-back awardee of the ‘most organized documents.’
“We develop young athletes through our developmental programs. We are the association run to by some stakeholders to push their interests. And believe me, there are a lot of opportunities for NOPSSCEA,” Molina said.
“I was telling some close friends, there are a lot of things in stored for NOPSSCEA, too much to do, yet too little time. Two years I would say is not enough for a person with goals and with hearts for NOPSSCEA as there are a lot of things to iron out,” he added.
“NOPSSCEA is not mine nor the Board’s, nor the teachers, nor the parents or nor students.
We are NOPSSCEA. And the only way for us to keep the fire burning is to take part in its endeavors. Protect the association because when you hit it, you hit your own self. I wish all of us the best and will see you around,” he said./PN
