MANILA – Negrense FIDE Master Sander Severino has rocked the country again after being hailed as the winner of the International Physically Disabled Chess Association online world chess championship 2020.
The four time Asian Para games champion who hails from Silay City, Negros Occidental-native finished with 8.5 points – one point and a half ahead of his three closest rivals – to rule the competition.
“Another dream come true. To God be all the glory,” Severino wrote in his Facebook post. “Salamat sa lahat. Maghanda na uli ako sa next tournament.”
It was the 34-year-old Severino’s third online chess crown after ruling the Cesar Orbe Memorial Chess 960 and placing second in the FIDE Online Cup for People with Disabilities.
Meanwhile, compatriots National Master Jasper Rom (6.5 points) and Arena Grand Master Henry Lopez (6.5 points) ended in the Top 10 of the competition which attracted a total of 118 players from 23 countries./PN
