Cop faces raps over homicide attempt

ILOILO City – A police officer faces administrative and criminal charges for allegedly trying to kill a barangay kagawad in Brgy. San Pedro, Molo district.

SPO1 Glenn Esguerra, assigned at city hall, is the subject of a manhunt by his fellow police personnel following the complaint of Rhomar Martirez, 46, a kagawad of Brgy. San Pedro.

Around 2:30 a.m. yesterday, Martirez told the police, he was awakened by a loud voice outside his house. It was Esguerra’s.

Esguerra, who was inside his car, was arguing with three motorists, Martirez said.

The barangay kagawad went out of the house to check what the problem was. He chided the policeman for disturbing the sleeping residents of their neighborhood.

If Martirez were to be believed, Esguerra answered back, “ti ano” (so what) then threatened to shoot him.

Sensing it was no use arguing with the policeman, Martirez said he went back to his house. Then he heard a burst of gunfire.

Martirez believed the shot was meant for him.

Esguerra left, driving his car away.

As of press time, Esguerra’s whereabouts were unknown.

Molo police chief, Senior Insp. Marlon Valencia said Martirez will be filing an attempted homicide charge against Esguerra.

An administrative case for grave misconduct will also be filed.

If proven guilty, Esguerra could be dismissed from the service.

Senior Insp. Rio Maymay, Esguerra’s immediate superior at city hall, said the policeman was off-duty at the time of the incident.

“If he wants to surrender, I can help him. I am appealing to him and his family. Better surrender and face the charges,” Maymay said./PN
