Bacolod churches to suspend masses

BY DOMINIQUE GABRIEL BAÑAGA

BACOLOD City – Churches under the Archdiocese of Bacolod are suspending public masses and other religious gatherings for one week beginning Aug. 24.

Bishop Patricio Buzon said this move was in response to the call of medical societies here and in Negros Occidental to limit mass mobility and gatherings to avert the continuing spike coronavirus disease 2019 cases.

“Our hospitals are critically reaching their limits, medical practitioners and service staff overwhelmed and overworked and some hospital personnel getting infected,” Buzon lamented.

He said the Diocese deemed it necessary to give the much needed support for frontliners and the hospitals through a gesture of sympathy of a week-long suspension of masses.

Pabillo, however, said masses and religious services online would continue.

Buzon hopes their initiative could help limit the movement of people, thus reducing the possibility of local COVID-19 transmission./PN
