VOTUM on top of Polish Team Championship after Round 7

The GM Pentala Harikrishna-led VOTUM SA Polonia Wrocław team is leading the ongoing 2020 Polish Team Championship – Ekstraliga at the Best Western Hotel in Krakow, Poland.

The event is among the classical tournaments currently being played in the European continent without COVID-19 protocols in place.

The 10-team, single round robin, six-board team tournament has a time format of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment on the first time control and 30 minutes plus 30 seconds per move to finish the game. Some of the world’s top grandmasters are playing in the event, although some skipped even if their names were already submitted in the final lineups probably because of talent fee issues.

The standings after Round 7: 1. VOTUM SA Polonia Wrocław; 2. Pęgów Tower; 3. Wasko HETMAN GKS Katowice; 4. KSz Stilon Gorzów; 5. KSz Miedź Legnica; 6. Silesia Racibórz Chess Club; 7. KSz Hetman Płock; 8. Two Towers Chess Club Krakow; 9. UKS 21 Podlesie; 10. LKS Wrzos Międzyborów.

On paper, Wasko HETMAN is supposed to be the strongest team having GMs Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Radoslaw Wojtaszek, David Navara and Nigel Short at the top four boards and an Elo 2639 team average. Unfortunately, only Wojtaszek showed up. The team probably cannot afford the talent fees of the others.
