ALLOW us to share with you today a story from our book, “My Brother-in-Law & Other Stories”, based on our experience in one hotel:
ALL BUSINESS AND NO SERVICE
While waiting at the hotel to confer with a guest who is arriving from Manila, I asked for a glass of water from the waiter.
“I am sorry, Sir, we do not have a glass of water. We only have bottled mineral water,” he replied.
Okay, bottled mineral water then, I said.
“That will be P30, Sir,” he said.
All I asked was a glass of water to drink. Now you let me buy one bottle of mineral water and let me pay P30?
“Well, the tap water here in the hotel may not be safe to drink, Sir. It is only good for washing,” he explained.
I did not want to argue further. I am thirsty. I paid P30 and grabbed the bottled water.
After drinking the water, I asked the desk: Can I use your phone? I want to check the airport if the plane from Manila has landed.
“Yes, Sir. Do you have a phone card?” answered the clerk.
Why would I need a phone card? All I want is just to make one telephone call. I was somewhat irritated.
“But sorry, Sir. You cannot get an outside line from our telephone here,” the desk clerk explained.
Okay then, give me a phone card, I said.
“That will be P100, Sir,” said the clerk.
I needed to make the call. Grudgingly, I paid P100 and took the card and murmured: You are all business here and no service!
“Thank you very much, Sir,” he replied.
