MANILA – Over 350 universities and colleges have applied to increase their tuition and other fees.
Sen. Nancy Binay wants the Senate to investigate. Is there a need to increase tuition fees, most especially in private colleges and universities?
Binay is the chair of the Senate committee on social justice, welfare and rural development.
“Increase in tuition and other school fees should be thoroughly examined to determine whether such is appropriate and reasonable,” said Binay.
In Metro Manila alone, 74 private schools have filed petitions for increases in tuition.
In filing Senate Resolution 657, Binay cited Education Act of 1982. Any tuition increase in private schools must be “subject to rules and regulations promulgated by the government,” the law stressed.
Last year, 354 private secondary schools were allowed to increase their tuition.
Recently, the Department of Education said close to 250 private elementary and high schools were allowed to increase their tuition fees for school year 2014-2015.
