ILOILO City – Several areas in 23 barangays were placed under “surgical lockdown” for having at least three confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The lockdown started at 6 p.m. yesterday. It would end at 5:59 p.m. on Oct. 2.

According to the city government’s COVID-19 Team spokesperson Jeck Conlu, a “surgical lockdown” will allow for a targeted and more effective response to active cases in specific households or neighborhoods.

It means less wastage of city government resources, said Conlu.

“Ang resources naton indi basta-basta ma-deplete. Also, ang pagbantay indi tuman kabudlay,” he added.

It would be very challenging if whole barangays would be placed under total lockdown, said Mayor Jerry Treñas.

The city government would be straining its resources providing food packs to all households, he explained.

“We may not be able to provide enough for all barangay residents, thus we need to work within our limitations,” said Treñas.

These were the specific areas in the 23 barangays and their number of active COVID-19 cases recorded from Sept. 26 to 28:

As of yesterday, Iloilo City’s COVID-19 cases stood at 2,264 with 54 deaths.

But with 1,162 cases having recovered, Iloilo City is left with 1,048 active COVID-19 cases, data from the Department of Health Region 6 showed.

COVID-19 spreads from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are expelled when an infected person coughs or exhales.

These droplets also land on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth./PN
