BACOLOD City – A sport utility vehicle (SUV) slid under a sugarcane-loaded truck along the Circumferential Road in Barangay Villamonte.

A businessman and his two companions succumbed to severe injuries. Their Ford Mustang plowed the back of the 10-wheeler truck shortly after midnight yesterday, according to Major Charles Gever, Police Station 4 chief.

Gever identified the casualties as Stanley Flores, his passengers Welton Porcel and Mark John Porcel – all residents of Barangay Villamonte.

Police investigation revealed that Flores was behind the wheel of the speeding Mustang and was tailing the truck driven by Michael Mejica, 42, of Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

The SUV crashed into the truck’s rear end and ended up lodged under the much larger vehicle around 1 a.m.

Gever said the victims died instantly.

Mejica, on the other hand, was placed under police custody. He will be released from detention if no charges are filed against him within the reglementary period, Gever said./PN
