Amid extortion claims, capitol engineer resigns

ILOILO – Amid allegations of extortion, Engineer Bienvenido Batalliones III, 26, filed yesterday an irrevocable resignation.

Engineer Romeo Andig, Provincial Engineering Office (PEO) head, confirmed to Panay News that he received Batalliones’ resignation letter.

Ang iya didto reason amo ang controversy nakahatag sang daku nga pagtublag sa iya pamilya kag sa provincial capitol,” said Andig.

He will endorse the resignation letter of Batalliones to Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.

Andig also said Batalliones already received a copy of the show cause order issued by the governor.

The embattled capitol employee is currently assigned at the PEO and was a former member of the Bids and Awards Committee’s technical working group.

He was embroiled in a controversy over his alleged extortion of P30,000 from a construction firm owned by former Iloilo City councilor Plaridel Nava of Iloilo City.

On Friday, Nava told Panay News he was visited by Batalliones to personally apologize. Batalliones also pleaded that Nava not to pursue charges against him.

“I have decided to accept his apology and at the same time I will set aside my plan to charge him administratively and criminally. Everyone has the chance to reform and I will give him that opportunity because he is still young with a promising career. I don’t want to ruin his future and his career for this,” Nava added.

The former councilor likewise clarified that his acceptance of Batalliones’ apology was “without prejudice to whatever legal action Governor Defensor would undertake to cleanse the provincial government of corruption.”/PN
