GM Alexander Donchenko seized the solo leadership of the 2020 Tegernsee Masters even though he was held to a draw by IM Leon Luke Mendonca in Round 5 action of the Category 13 (average Elo: 2567) single round robin event at Bad Wiessee in Germany’s Upper Bavaria.
Donchenko’s erstwhile co-leader and top seed GM Matthias Bluebaum had the bye in Round 5, a situation that also proved favorable to GM Pierre Luigi Basso who shared second-third places with Bluebaum after splitting the point with IM Daniel Dardha. Moving up the standings were GMs Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu and Thai Dai Van Nguyen who defeated their respective Round 5 opponents IM Ashot Parvanyan and GM Alexandr Fier respectively. The luckless and out-of-form Fier absorbed his third loss in four games and now occupies the bottom rung.
The standings after Round 5: 1. Donchenko, 3½; 2-3. Bluebaum, Basso, 3; 4-5. Nisipeanu, Nguyen, 2½; 6-7. Mendonca, Dharda, 2; 8. Parvanyan, 1; 9. Fier, ½.
